Dear Believer,

"Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." — Romans 12:10 (ESV)

When navigating grief, scripture reminds us to pay attention to those who have honored us and our loved ones. In the wake of a funeral, a vital first step in healing is simply to stop and take in everything that has taken place.

In times of deep sorrow, we can naturally become focused inward and miss the support surrounding us. Yet, for the journey ahead, you will need to be reminded of everything that strengthens you. You will need reminders of the people who showed up to honor your grief and the memory of the person you lost.

Take time to recognize everyone who was there for you and your family—those who attended the funeral or memorial, those who reached out before or after, colleagues who offered encouragement, and friends who called or sent messages. Whether you received many gestures or just a few, try not to take them for granted. Look through the guest book, re-read the cards and text messages, and receive every bit of encouragement sent your way.

Why is this so important? Because the pain of loss can feel overwhelming, and reading these messages of consolation helps offset that pain. Taking in the care of others replenishes your emotional capacity when you feel empty.

If you are able today, set aside time to go through these condolences again. Read them aloud, receive the comfort being offered, and offer a quiet prayer or thought of gratitude for each person who reached out. Do not fear the tears that may come—reading these messages applies love, healing, and encouragement directly to your pain, reminding you that you are not alone in this sea of grief.

May you find comfort in knowing how deeply you and your loved one are cared for as you read the messages.

Grace and peace be on to you!
